Lost Horizon English

ost Horizon is an upcoming adventure game from Germany. I say this right from the start just in case, in its mother tongue, the script is beautiful and poetic, voiced remarkably by professional and enthusiastic actors. Which absolutely might be the case. The version I’ve been playing is in English. And oh, my.

Look. Here’s a note for people who are making narrative-driven games. You are trying to get us to invest in your story. You’ve crafted this delightful universe to explore, probably devised extensive character profiles, and almost certainly want us to be captivated and enthralled with every twist and turn. So please, for the love of all that is healthy on this poor dying planet, hire some people who can write, and some more people who can act.

Those responsible for Lost Horizon haven’t done so. This point-and-click adventure, which has been in development and getting genre fans excited for some time, features – quite honestly – some of the most atrociously bad dialogue I’ve seen in a game for ages. That’s quite the statement to make, so here: allow me to reinforce my claims with the following screenshot.

Okay, okay. I admit, in this instance, we’re supposed to think that main character Fenton Paddock is as much of a dick as his name suggests. Perhaps, then, it might seem like I’m being unfair. So let me also present to you this, before I go and cry in a corner for the rest of time.

The game is loosely based on the 1933 novel of the same name, but to compare this with classic literature is somewhat akin to saying your seven-year-old’s piano recital is heavily inspired by the work of Chopin. The book was set in the early 1930s and focused on one character’s search for peace, love and forgiveness in the fictional valley of Shangri-La. The game thrusts time forwards a few years, chucks in some Nazis all over the place, and goes around pretending it’s an Indiana Jones film.

That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and if Lost Horizon’s insanely high production values are maintained throughout, it could just be presented decently enough to be interesting. The pre-rendered backgrounds are beautiful, authentic and evocative, and tremendous weather effects and 3D character models merge seamlessly with the scenery. Even the cinematics, which interrupt the pointing and clicking from time to time, are wonderfully composed. This is an unusually elegant adventure game.

And initially, I was quite taken by the puzzles, as well. Early conundrums are delightful and logical, if straight-forward. Maybe such quality design returns at a later point in the game. Hopefully. A couple of hours in, I was desperately trying to get rid of a guard so I could distract a cat, who was stopping me from catching some flies, which I needed in order to feed a bat so that an obnoxious child would give me my wallet back, which would mean I could get on with the actual puzzle I was trying to complete, which was to find a photo so that an elderly man with a hysterically stupid voice could tell me where I could find some dude I was looking for. Sorry, spoilers.

And the voices. Oh, the voices. I’d forgotten just how bad the voices are for a minute. In some ways, I feel bad for laying into an unfinished game quite so heavily, based on just a few hours of play. I don’t want to understate quite how beautiful and cinematic Lost Horizon can be, either. And it of course might improve as the story moves onwards. But the voices are inexcusable. The best compliment I can pay them is that they are quite literally not the worst I’ve heard in an adventure game.

Some of the voice work’s just frightening. The elderly man I mentioned before? When he first spoke, I actually cringed. Think a drunk Yoda. Other actors sound like they had one too many beers last night instead, and now, all they want to do is go home and sleep until the pain goes away.

Something pretty spectacular had better happen outside of the preview version I’ve been playing. Otherwise, despite its slick presentation and a faintly interesting story, people who throw down money on Lost Horizon this August might well end up with a similar wish.
